Bishop of Ely expresses hope for debate on women bishops
The Bishop of Ely, the Rt Revd Stephen Conway, has today expressed his hope that the Church of England will come to a common mind when General Synod reconvenes in November to debate women bishops.
Speaking after this week’s meeting of the House of Bishops, Bishop Stephen said: “It was a creative and consolidating session when we were able to recognise a number of key issues and we were able to discern a way forward.
“I am heartened and grateful to have been part of an overwhelming majority promoting a general final text for the legislation. I have real hope from this for our unity in mission.”
The full vote on the legislation takes place at the meeting of the General Synod of the Church of England which meets in London from 19-21 November. For the legislation to pass, it will require a two thirds majority in each of the houses of Bishops, Clergy and Laity.
